"If you find your way, the Way will find you."

The sight of the wagons of a group of travelling cranes is quite a sight, in any kingdom of the Known World, of which they travel the length and breadth.  They are festooned with colour, adults and children running freely between homes that belong to no-one and everyone.  Above most caravans rises a column of dust; over that of the tengu it is a column of clamour.  When the entire group joins in, their calls carry over leagues, letting nearby towns and villages know that they are arriving.  When dozens of groups come together into the great fair that occurs for a whole eight by eight-day every sixty-four moons (the "Cycle"), in a different place apparently indicated by the whispers of the wind, it is said that the echos it leaves take a whole season to die out.

For the tengu are merchants and tinkers, wide of eye and easy in the bargaining; it is the game they love, not the profit.  They carry not only goods but also news the width and breadth of the land; they love stories and songs, and their elders are a treasure trove of them.

Their beliefs are part of the Way, a philosophy of life in which hate and greed have no role to play, and there is no notion of debt or possession, or even bonds.  Couples form at the Five-Year Fair, but they do not travel together when it breaks up, promising only to remain faithful until they meet again in another half-decade; children born to them will spend alternate Cycles with each parent until they are ready to strike out with another group.

It all sounds idyllic, and to be honest, it is.  Nonetheless tengu have a dagger-like beak and when they have to, they know how to use it and any other weapons they have to hand.  It is not for nothing, that one of the martial art styles of Alladore is known as "The Way of the Crane".
