"Every great story seems to begin with a snake."

As has been told regarding her brother, Akriss, Szarzeesi is part of a dynasty of magic-using snake-people.  Although she naturally shares many of their species characteristics, Szarzeesi's path is her own.  Indeed, while Akriss always followed the path chosen for him, his sister has diverged.

First of all, she eschews the more intellectual aspects of magic to serve as a battle-mage, capable of wreaking direct and brutal havoc with not only fire, but, to the utmost horror of the rest of her family, sword (or rather, polearm).  Her weapon is actually a magical construct that also serves as a wand, amplifying the power of her magical strikes.

Secondly, Szarzeesi, who always intended to join the Alladore military establishment, has studied the habits of other Elaïn peoples, and learned how to conform to them.  It requires enormous effort on her part, to force her multi-phase snake mind into the linear path required for normal conversation.  She however welcomes the discipline such meditation requires, and the results also provide her with the focus needed for efficient, deadly, combat.  In any case, Szarzeesi has become a revered leader, inspiring confidence and initiative in her company.  She has drawn the attention of higher circles, who believe that she will go far, perhaps even becoming the first snake-person in the history of Alladore to hold a court rank.  Many snake-people have influenced political decisions from behind the throne, but none have ever stood before it in the light.
