"Snake eyes.  Unlucky you."

For some reason, snake-people are particularly sensitive to magic, and their families form true dynasties of wizards. Being ectothermic, they have a very economical metabolism, which means plenty of time for study coupled with an extensive firewood bill for their academies.  Now and then they must, however, eat, and to the discomfort of many do not eschew living prey.  A snake-feast is not a pleasant thing to witness, the participants dislocating their jaws to swallow their meal whole, then slipping into a torpor to slowly digest it over several days.  Snakes in ranger companies tend to eat before setting out, both to avoid this unpleasant spectacle for their comrades, and avoid exposing themselves to danger during the ensuing semi-coma.

Over generations, Akriss' family - among whom his sister, Szarzeesi - has developped a carefully guarded method to sense magical energy in living things and objects, and draw on it for their spellcasting.  Akriss' forked tongue is constantly flickering, seeking out such energy, in the air or in the soil.  Like most snake-folk, he can also see heat emissions (and, to his occasional embarrassement, is subconsciously drawn to them).

Hence, he is not the easiest of companions; to make matters worse, his thought patterns are somewhat alien to other Elaïn species, and his emotions literally imperceptible, making interaction awkward.  Nonetheless, he is a totally fearless and relentless leader in the battle against the Jungle Deep, able to call upon a wide array of spells to wreak havoc against Alladore's enemies.
