The so-called Preying Mantis folk of the Great Forest of Nar actually represent a quite wide variation of different insect-folk, who are a rare evolutionary branch of the Elaïn.  Whereas all Elaïn are physically related to one or more Mairen species, the direct resemblance of the Preying Mantis folk to their babelushga insect cousins is a source of great disturbance for other peoples.  Hu-Mans apparently feel something akin to such a skin-crawling reaction, when they come across the giant hairy talking spiders of the Jungle of Xaf.

The sound-making apparatus of the insect folk, not always situated in their mouths, also mean that their languages are very hard to comprehend for other Elaïn, to whom they seem to be an unending sequence of chittering.  As for the insect-folk, they are often physically incapable of pronouncing the tongues of the rest of the Known World.  Beyond that there are conceptual difficulties, as the insect-folk do not really seem to understand the notion of individuality.  One of the leading Alladoran scholars of their cultures has stated "In the insect-folk languages, there is no I, no you, no past or future tense.  There is only we now, but wrought with subtleties that draw time and space into a sort of multi-dimensional web.  There is nothing like it in any other cultural group, and after decades of study, I am just a tiny fly in that web, fascinated, caught, and struggling to figure the way out".

It may be that the coming of the Jungle Deep will herald a new era for the Great Forest of Nar, for insect-folk were among the first volunteers to heed the call of the King of Alladore.  Rumour has it that they have somehow stepped up their reproduction rate, so as to provide legions of volunteers, and that would certainly be a sight to see.
