"I'll take the top bunk."

Many Elaïn who share common ancestry with avian species of Mairen, have lost their wings at some time during their evolution.  There is some rivalry with those that have not : to the insult "mudhugger" responds that of "bird-brain".

Regardless of their loss of flight, falcons love nothing less than heights.  In the cities, they will always lodge on the topmost floor.  Only go on a hiking holiday with a falcon friend, if you don't mind edging along above the dizziest drops into oblivion with no handrail.  She won't flinch.  Her eyesight is so penetrating, even in the dark, that she'll pick out the merest fingerhold while you are still trying to locate your own feet.  If she is in a prankish mood, she'll simply jump.  Yes, falcons are the most extraordinary acrobats the world has known, capable of diving from great heights, plummeting to the ground at death-defying speeds, and miraculously landing, unharmed, on their feet.  They move so fast, nobody has ever unravelled how they do it.

So why did Orus become an architect ?  The reason is simple.  You know the tallest belfry in the known world, in the Tollonian city of Rockport ?  The one that stands aloof from all other civilisation, atop a savage windswept cliff that dominates the thrashing sea.  Orus designed that.  A pilgrimage for all falcons.
