Growing up among Hyaenidae is not the easiest of childhoods.  To start with, males are much smaller than the stocky, broad-built females, and they suffer for it.  Society is openly competitive; those who are forced to back down will eat little, and go as far as to starve to death if the wider Elaïn community does not get involved.  This ferocious competition occurs within highly codified clan structures, but within each clan, the matriarch of every family cares only for her own.

Those Hyaenidae males that make it as far as adult life are tough, cunning and opportunistic.  They consider no task beneath themselves, but once settled into a profession or position, will rise swiftly through the pecking order until they no longer can.  "Never turn your back on a hyena, always let him lead the way", goes the popular saying; they are not popular.  In the military, they tend to a certain ruthlessness that makes them appreciated by some commanders.
