"It takes a monster to catch a monster."
As long as the world has existed, there have always been monsters. The Elaïn call them Terras. The coming of the civilised kingdoms has pushed them out towards the margins, but they are always there, ever watching, ever hungry.
Monster hunters such as ours track down such creatures, with a healthy royal bounty - theoretically, at least - for each carcass brought in. Rultiax is not, however, the typical hunter. He discovered that certain monsters - generally those that resemble oversized Maïren - are actually mutations. Drawing on frog folklore and tales, he experimented on these creatures by injecting them with his own blood. Whatever the reason, it can sometimes reduce the aggressiveness of these creatures. The two giant shrews that can always be found tailing Rultiax are among the "monsters" that he has saved.
