"A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor".
Those Elaïn that have evolved from salt-water fish, whilst able to breathe air, have generally retained their ability to breathe underwater in salt-rich environments. It is thus unsurprisingly that many of them remain linked to the sea. For reasons yet unknown, Elaïn with salt-water ancestors are generally of larger size than their landborn cousins.
Every kingdom has a vital link to the sea - Portrerik, for example, in Alladore is the kingdom's second largest city and its foremost commercial one - ensuring plentiful and gainful employment.
Many sailors, however - and Trig is among them - prefer working for the Tollonian Principalities. A merchantman one day becomes a privateer the next, benefitting from letters of marque in one of the endless conflicts between princes. When a ship goes down, there is plentiful bounty to be found on the sea bottom...
