Shika is one of the Maïren gifted with speech, although she uses it only rarely.  She hitched up with Angadrême at some point that both of them have forgotten; disappeared for a decade and then found her way back again.  When Angadrême fought her way back into Alladore, the cat was waiting for her, at the very point they crossed the border.  Cats.  Go figure.
