Ruairidh hails from the north-western reaches of Alladore, from the highlands out of which the River Nylen flows.  To his natural prickles, for which all Erinaceidae are famed for, he adds the prickly nature of these parts : fierce, hard living, loyal to his clan.

Ruairidh is quick to anger and slow to forgive, and prone to transforming a simple insult into a dramatic gaes, a symbolic and publicly sworn quest to right a wrong.  The hedgehog has become renowned for this, and his journeys to seek vengeance have given rise to a new local word, used whenever a chance meeting between two strangers gets ugly : ridh-rage.
