As natural diggers, armadillos are well suited to tasks deep underground, whilst their armour gives them immunity to many dangers.  Stifling heat is just a bonus...

Before the Jungle Deep, Pattashin worked in the iron ore mines.  At the old King's call, he joined up, and his strength, almost foolhardy courage, and unshakeable irony led him into the Rangers of Alladore.

This choice also ultimately led him to his death, during the attempt made by the Rangers to recover the lost Decanter of St. Emila, from the saint's convent in western Lorenthia (Mission 4).
